and corn crib on my farm in Iowa. Inside frame is with 4" x 4", 4" x 6" and
4" x 8" yellow pine. Most all the outside 1" x 6" verticals are yellow pine
as well as the batons. Oil stain on outside to match our ranch style house.
Inside is beautiful...unfinished wood. Faces south.

Floor is 2" x 12" and 2" x 10" yellow pine boards, supported by pressure
treated 2" x 10"'s. Cedar shake roof.

Will put finishing touches on it this Summer."

Todd's Lighthouse Shed

This is a shed / playhouse that I built a few years ago for a Hospice charity auction. It is based upon an actual lighthouse on Grand Island in Lake Superior. It was intended as a playhouse and includes an interior ladder that accesses the coupla and a door to the upper balcony for surveying one’s domain. The floor is custom painted with gameboards, and a built-in desk provides space for adventure planning. The winning bid at the auction was $9500.00 including transportaton and installation. The main part of the shed is 8 x 12 feet, and it is 16’ high at the top of the coupla.

Richard's Pine Shed

This original pine garden wood shed made from 100% red and white pine wood.
Built in Saint Rose Laval ( Quebec ) Canada from lumber harvested at the A.Chiasson Lumber Farm ( St.Lin ) Quebec Canada.

15 feet by 12 feet, this garden shed is used as a garden tool storage area but will soon be turned into a family wood working and arts and craft shop.

I received a copy of Stylish Sheds by Debra Prinzing from the publisher in the summer. I have mentioned before that I really struggle with writing book reviews (which is rather unfortunate since I am a fervent reader) so for this one I will simply say what I think:

The book is gorgeous. It's loaded with photos of all sorts of sheds that are used for all sorts of reasons in an array of styles with lots of detail shots. Gardening, art, writing, hiding, thinking, playing, napping, eating, meditating, parties. You name it, someone is doing it in their shed!

Debra Prinzing is a superb writer. William Wright is an excellent photographer.

The stories of the sheds and their owners/creators are inspiring and cover everything from the practical to (what I would call) the spiritual aspects of creating a room of one's own.

When I first received the book, I poured through the photos. Since then, I have been slowly devouring it, story by story. I don't really want it to end. I keep finding more ideas and inspiration that confirm my desire for uniqueness over conformity, and delight over resell value in my own empire.

In summary: it's lovely.

How to save money building a shed

This shed isn't particularly attractive but it comes with a very good idea: build your shed against an existing building. The one pictured here was built onto the back basement wall of a house. They built a second one on the adjacent wall around the corner. Very handy for gardening.

Benefits: You'll gain structural support and save on building costs due to the shared wall. Also, these long narrow sheds with wide doorways are great for making everything inside easily accessible. I see lots of sheds that are long and deep and it's a small battle just getting the lawn mower out!

Here's pic 2 of my garden sheds seen from my deck. The small oriental-style shed on the right is storage for my potting area. The door construction was quite a project. I was trying to capture the feel of the temple doors that you see in Japan or China. It was a difficult project (and heavy) but quite satisfying when they were finished.

The strapping and back-plates were hand pounded 3/16 steel and the asian-style handles were from www.chinesebrasshardware.com
out of Calif. The wood-finish is, dark stain topped with red paint then lightly sanded, then a misting of gold paint and sealed with clear varnish.

A tip on construction: use seasoned wood to decrease the chance of warpage.

Anne-Marie's shed is in Ontario Canada on a one acre property with her 1926 schoolhouse. She writes:

I've been working on the property for 12 years and have renovated the teachers carriage house (which was a wreck when I moved here) first into a small barn for my horse and motorcycle then into a garden shed/studio.

I make garden stepping stones from cement using large leaves as moulds, my
boyfriend makes metal garden sculpture. And well....I still keep my
two motorcycles in there.

These photos were taken after it's latest transformation:

We've also built a greenhouse with potting areas indoors and outdoors. It was built from salvaged windows and doors collected from various places. The south roof was sliding doors found in a friends barn, some of the windows are old storms off the historic train station in Sarnia, Ontario.

I saw this shed on a farm garden tour. It's built onto the side of a very large horse/hay barn.

I love all the western decorating touches.

It was a very hot day and we went through the door to find an enormous pig and a llama resting in the cool shade.

Shed Became a Playhouse

The owners of this shed decided to convert it into a playhouse by raising it up on stilts. You can't tell from the photo but this is the highest ground behind this farm house and the views (front and back) are spectacular. Lucky grandchildren!

Here is a little cabin we built (you can see it behind the well house) on the back of our place. It has one bedroom, small kitchen, living room and bathroom. The inside is all decorated in Shabby Chic. We had almost $3,000 in this!

I saw this little shed on a recent farm garden tour. The paddles decorating the barn-style door make sense if you know that the shed is beside a very large pond with a rowboat.
